I have never bought an equity before but I am very keen to do it. How to do it with the minimum amount, say 5k? Is it possible to trade with such minimal amount?

get registered for trading and demat account through a broker suitable to you.handover him papers for address proof(voters card, telephone electric bill),indentity proof (pan, passport) with forms,stamp-paper dully signed by you.
broker will provide you a limit say about 35000/- to trade intraday and about 5000/- for delivery transaction in 5k.
yah it is possible , please call me on my cell 09350479971 or mail me at vishu_bharal@yahoo.co.in
It is always better to go step by step in any case so i would also suggest the same.
You just follow three steps and i am sure you will achieve the answer to your question
1) Learn about stock market on internet (mansukh.com, India infoline, India bulls)
2) Try to go through the report section on mansukh to have all the details of the happenings in stock market
3) After gaining decent information try to consult some expert who can guide your investment for best returns
Part one is quite easy to answer. Open an account with broker he will get all the formalities completed. He will provide you a trading A/c number and Demat A/c number and you are now ready to purchase any stock. Buy your choice and pay the money. Simple !
Trading is an altogether a different ball game and you need a bigger account to trade successfully.
