You can find a good number of mailing list brokers on the Internet. Before you commit to any one of them, however, do your homework and make sure you know exactly who it is you are trying to reach. Successful direct mail isn’t just about reaching a lot of prospects, it’s about reaching the right prospects.
The better you have defined your target audience, the better your chance to succeed with a direct mail program. Here are just a few of the ways you can target your direct mail data base:
Proximity
If you own a retail store, you may want to target x–number of customers within a certain mile radius of your store. Research shows that the majority of customers are only willing to travel within a certain mile radius to claim a retail offer.
Demographic Data
You can also narrow your mailing list by age, income and marital status (just a few of the many parameters to choose from). If you have a product or service that is of interest to seniors, you may not want to waste time and money sending your direct mail to 25-34 year olds.
Purchase Habits:
If you believe, for instance, that your product or service is of interest to people who own automobiles, you can obtain mailing lists of licensed drivers. Or, you can base your list on other major purchases – for example: homes. If you are selling a landscaping service, you won’t want to waste money reaching apartment renters – you will want to concentrate on people who own their own homes.
Media Habits
There are also lists of people that are based on what types of magazines and newspapers they subscribe to. If you have a unique product or service, it might make sense to try to obtain the mailing list of a magazine that your prospects may already subscribe to.
As you can imagine, the tighter your mailing list parameters, the more expensive a mailing list can become. At the same time, however, the more effective your direct mail campaign will be.
Good luck finding a mailing list broker. Make sure they aren’t just selling you a bunch of names. Have them speak to you about TARGETED mailing lists based on specific mailing parameters.
