of course…. how old are you out of curiousity? As a new investor i can see possibly not knowing this but most people know that the most common way to purchase stocks these days is away from the traditional brick/mortart trading houses and using an online broker…

yes. you need to open a brokerage account to do it. check out ameritrade, etrade, schwab, scottrade, rushtrade, zecco … there are many others. Also look into whether your bank has online trading.
